{how pinterest can strengthen your marriage}

It's Monday. Man Crush Monday. I love my man. He's my everything. I mean who could not love this stud?

We have been married almost 4 years this summer. It's been awesome. Really. We are so compatible. I am competitive, he's not at all. We both are go-with-the-flow and pretty laid back about the little things. I think I can count on 2 fingers the number of fights we have had. We are lovers not fighters I guess : )

However, we are reaching the point in our marriage where familiarity, school/work, children and routine are all taking it's toll on our relationship. We aren't struggling or anything but we are noticing that we have to actually put forth effort to connect with each other.

That was the one thing we heard over and over as newlyweds; that we would reach a point, 3-4 years out, where the flame of passion (yes someone actually used that phrase) would not be enough to sustain us. And of course as newlyweds we were like "puhlease, our honeymoon phase will never end!" But honestly they were right. Marriage after time, becomes work no matter how compatible you are.

On top of reaching the 3-4 year "honeymoon's over" phase, Garett spent 3 months in Dallas for his internship while Anders and I stayed in Provo. A lot of effort was needed to help us still feel connected over that time period.

During that time I spent a lot of time thinking about the different things I could be doing to reach out to him and let him know I was thinking about him. So naturally I hopped on Pinterest and I created a board just for him and on it I pinned fun ideas, marriage articles, little gift ideas, etc that I thought Garett would appreciate.

It was awesome. I kept remembering little things that Garett loves and I would search out ideas and find a million different things I could do. For example, I know that Garett loves thought provoking "Would You Rather" questions and since I was going to be driving 19 hours back with him from Texas I found a bunch of links to questions and pinned them to my board so I could just pull them up in the car. That is why Pinterest is a rockstar. I honestly don't have time to be that creative. All I have to do is think of one idea then Pinterest shows me so many ways to accomplish it.

After all the articles I have read and ideas I have seen here are just a few ideas that you can do right away to surprise your man and let him know you are still in love!

1. Flirt

This is how you fell in love in the first place! The prolonged staring, the lingering touch, etc. Anytime you get the chance you should flirt. Garett is a champion flirter. My favorite is when we are out in public just doing everyday routines like grocery shopping and I catch Garett staring at me as I'm loading the cart with produce. Then he quickly grabs my butt! (Sorry if that's too much but I'm not going to lie it's sexy when he does that!). We have been caught once. A coworker once told me she laughed out loud at the grocery store when she saw Garett make that move. Oops!

2. Date/Quality Time

This is the advice I see the most. Date your spouse regularly. Set aside a day or time every week that is for you two. We don't always go out for our date. The reality is sometimes children, budgets, etc make going out every week unrealistic. But you should still have your special time.

Garett and I probably go out on an actual date 2-3 times a month. But we do stuff together at home. Just this Saturday night we were both working on separate things in separate rooms after we had put Anders to bed. I looked at the clock and it was 9:55 pm. I got up, walked to Garett in the dining room and said, "you, me, Prison Break and leftover cupcakes at 10:30?" It was a date; in our pjs, on our couch with a couple of cupcakes. We like that sort of thing though. We ended up giving each other massages too which was nice; and yes it ended at massages ; )

3. Write notes to each other

I'm not talking about texts. I mean actual handwritten notes. Garett and I did this for quite some time before Anders was born. We'd leave them in random places in the house. My favorite though was passing off notes between each other in church. We would each write a letter to each other during the 2nd hour of church then when we went to our separate classes during 3rd hour we would have a lengthy note to read. I was always grinning like a fool in class and would even have to stifle a laugh every once and a while. People probably thought I was special or something.

It reminds me of a time before cell phones, when you had to pass notes to talk to your friends during class. There's something old school and romantic about it. Try it. You'll enjoy it.

Along with handwritten notes you can send flirty/loving texts too! Click here to read a great article with ideas for texting your spouse.

Those are just some of the fun marriage strengthening ideas you can find on Pinterest. Create your own board for you and your spouse and start collecting fun and different ideas that work for you!

And because I said this blog is also about Ander's Attic I thought I'd post a couple of my creations that relate to this topic : ) Enjoy! Again, use code NEWBLOG for 10% off!

***This one is a perfect way to let your spouse know whether or not "it" is going to happen tonight : ) I've given this one as a bridal shower gift and it's always a hit!

{new blog, new baby, new direction}

So this is probably the 3rd or 4th time I've re-done my blog. I love mixing things up I guess. Or as my grandma would so eloquently put it, "I'm a fart in a hot skillet".

It's true. I tend to shake things up quite a bit. When I was young I would rearrange my room every 2 weeks. My dad would get mad because he didn't want me messing up the carpet by dragging my metal bed frame around. But it didn't stop me. That was about as rebellious as I got as a teenager. But all the rearrangements never seemed to satisfy my inner sense of feng shui and I have found that I struggle to function properly when things aren't balanced.

After a lot of thinking and notes scribbled on my scratch pad I think I have discovered what I want this blog to be. A beautiful balance between Family, Life and my creation, Ander's Attic.

Family

Family is pretty darn important to me. This blog will definitely contain posts about my family life. We don't live next to all of our family. And honestly, the reason I started a blog in the first place years ago was to keep them all updated on Garett, myself and of course, the one they truly adore, Andersen.

So part of this blog's job is to appease the grandparents and let any other family members that care know that we are still alive and kicking.

That being said, the countdown to the new Johnson baby continues to wind down. 5 weeks left! We are beyond excited/ready to meet another little boy!

Life

Life is life. It is awesome. There is so much out there to learn about and share. My daily conversations, when Garett is in school full time, are typically about the following; potty time, nap time, the latest Jake and the Neverland Pirates episode and snacks. Riveting stuff. No, really I enjoy every minute of it, but as most stay-at-home moms can attest to I have adult thoughts too! I want to engage with people who can construct over 2 full sentences and thoughts at a time!

There is a lot (and sometimes, a little) in and on my mind and I like to talk when it gets too full. So if I find something cool it'll likely end up on here for all y'all to see. (I'm moving to Texas next year so I have to practice the slang.)

I'll probably share a lot of things about being a mom, wife, and business owner. It's sometimes a challenge and I look for a lot of advice. My child probably watches too much TV and I probably don't cook the healthiest meals all the time. But that's real life and I probably won't get a mom of the year award no big deal.

Ander's Attic

Lastly, I want this blog to showcase what is basically my other child, my business, Ander's Attic. I have so much fun creating and sharing what I create with other people. So you will see posts that show off what I've been doing! I'll try not to be too annoying ; )

I want to toot my horn just a bit and show you my current favorite designs!

This is what I do for a living and I love it! Just because you made it to the bottom of the post here is a coupon code for 10% your purchase: NEWBLOG

Well I think that's good for a first post in over a year. Don't want to over do it...might pull a muscle in my finger or something.

{diy growth ruler}

So I know I said that I was going to do a whole big blog post with tutorials when we finished our new apartment's makeover but I think I'll just post tutorials as I finish them : )

Today I finished making Anders a growth ruler! I have seen these for sale on Etsy for $50 plus $15+ shipping. Whoa! But I really love them! Therefore I decided make it myself.

Here's what you need:

- a plank of wood; I used a board that was 9in x 6ft x 1in - $6
- stain - already had some but you can get it @ Lowe's $6
- paint brush - already had one but you can get one for $3 @ Lowe's
- vinyl or black paint - $7.80
- measuring tape
- picture hanging hardware - $1.50

Total for Me: $15.30      Total if you don't have everything: $24.30

I went to Lowe's and got a 9in x 6ft x 1in plank of wood. I am not sure what type of wood I just looked for the cheapest one : ) But make sure it is pretty straight and lies flats! When you hang it up you want it to lay flat along the wall. You'll also need to pick out a stain you like and a paint brush. This is the stain that I used. I only did one coat and it was the perfect color.

In a well ventilated area stain the wood (I only did the front and sides since no one will see the back) and let it dry. I let mine dry for a couple days.
Next you will mark the inch and foot marks on the board. I am fairly certain my children will be over 6 foot tall as their father is 6'5" and I'm no shorty either. That being said I wanted my ruler to reach at least 6'5". So I decided to have my board hang 9 inches above the floor; which would allow my board to reach a height of 6'8". Find what works for you! After you figure out what inch you want your ruler to start on take a measuring tape and lay it along the edge of the board and with a Sharpie mark each inch and foot marks. Like so.

This next step requires choosing whether you want to use vinyl or black paint or Sharpie. I chose vinyl because I don't trust my painting skills and the Sharpie doesn't look as good in my opinion. I had some black vinyl already that I cut the dashes out of. My inch dashes are 1 inch long and 1/4 inch thick and my foot dashes are 3 inches long and 1/4 inch thick. Then on Etsy I found a lady that makes vinyl numbers 1-6 that are 4 inches tall. So I ordered them for $7.79. Here's the link. She has a lot of other cute vinyl wall decals too! I just ordered a bunch from her....you'll see them in our new apartment! Anyway, next you will lay the vinyl dashes over your marks you made with the Sharpie and press them down really good. Then I decided to put my numbers in front of the foot dash mark but you can put them where ever you want.

The last step is to add hanging hardware. I haven't decided which to use yet but both will work!

Here is the finished product! I LOVE it and I can't wait to show you what I have planned for this!
